‘Let’s stop “tolerating” or “accepting” difference, as if we’re so much better for not being different in the first place. Instead, let’s celebrate difference, because in this world it takes a lot of guts to be different.’
– Kate Bornstein

Down syndrome (sometimes called Down’s syndrome) is a condition in which a child is born with an extra copy of their 21st chromosome — hence its other name, trisomy 21. This causes physical and mental developmental delays and disabilities.
Way back in 2003, when Anoushka was born and was diagnosed with Down Syndrome , it fell upon us like thunder, we had not even heard about it . A lot of research was done to find out if it had any cure but the only truth was, it was a genetic condition and we had to accept her with open arms and lead a normal life . The only difference we could now make was to provide her with inputs required to make her as independent and self sufficient as possible.
Then began a new phase in our lives. We had to align ourselves to ensure she got the same treatment as our older daughter. We accepted the fact and moved on in life. With our continuous efforts and support, she achieved all milestones, though a bit delayed. We provided her with the best education, extra curricular activities, social outings and family vacations. Today, we see as an inspiration to not only the family members but her peers too.
It is important to provide them with an inclusive environment. Definitely, life is not as easy as it may seem but we need to be determined and committed towards the cause. We can make a difference in their lives just with our positive attitude.
